Magliocco
No, Magliocco is not a pasta dish, although it kind of sounds like one. Magliocco Canino is a red grape variety from Italy, which is mainly cultivated in the region of Calabria. Magliocco is a very old grape variety, in former times it was probably the most widespread variety in Calabria, from it the simple and rustic house wines were produced on their own. Over the centuries, Magliocco has been gradually displaced, which is a real pity, as it produces a tannin-rich red wine with ageing potential. The late maturing vine is sensitive to drought and requires considerable care.
Thanks to the enthusiasm of some innovative winegrowers, it is now slowly reclaiming its ancestral land. It is now replanted on about 1500 hectares and is a recognized DOC di Cosenza wine. Magliocco Canino is often confused with the Gaglioppo grape, but these are two independent varieties, which are often blended together. A close relative is the Magliocco Dolce variety, but it is much rarer and covers no more than 90 hectares of vineyards.
