Notes
Sherry-like dessert wine from Sardinia; dense, full nose, notes of raisins, almond biscuits, hazelnut and dried figs; warm and full-bodied, pleasantly dry on the palate; enormous length.
Vinification
Matured in oak and chestnut barrels for about 5 years. These are not filled completely, but only three-quarters full. Thanks to the air contact, a layer of so-called flor yeasts forms on the surface, similar to sherry, which can remain for several years. In contrast to sherry, however, Vernaccia di Oristano is not fortified. Since water can evaporate through the wood, the alcohol content of the wine naturally increases with the duration of the barrel storage and can sometimes rise to over 20 percent by volume.
Producer
CONTINI ATTILIO
Founded in 1898 by Salvatore Contini, it is one of the oldest and most prestigious wineries in Sardinia. The winery is located in Cabras, in the western part of Sardinia. The town is beautifully situated on the shores of the lake of the same name, surrounded by many historical and cultural buildings. The Vernaccia di Oristano has always been the trademark of the Azienda Contini and this wine won the gold medal at the International Wine Fair in Milan in 1912 and 1913. Today, the founder's grandchildren and great-grandchildren, with the same dedication and perfection, dedicate themselves to the demands of a growing and increasingly demanding market. Since 1980, the range has been constantly expanded and now includes dry white, rosato and red wines, mainly obtained from the Cannonau and Nieddera grape varieties (the oldest and rarest variety in Sardinia).
